Introduction
Many people use the terms wheat allergy, celiac disease and gluten sensitivity interchangeably, but they are three different conditions. Each involves a different body response, and knowing the difference is important for proper diagnosis and care.
Wheat Allergy
A wheat allergy is an immune reaction to proteins found in wheat. Symptoms can appear within minutes or a couple of hours and may include hives, swelling, itching, nausea, breathing difficulty or, in severe cases, anaphylaxis. It is more common in children, and many outgrow it.
Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is a lifelong autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Eating gluten damages the lining of the small intestine, which can lead to poor nutrient absorption, bloating, diarrhea, fatigue, anemia and weight loss.
Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity
People with gluten sensitivity experience symptoms such as stomach pain, headaches, brain fog and tiredness after eating gluten, but tests for celiac disease and wheat allergy come back negative. It does not cause intestinal damage.

Wheat allergy is identified through skin prick or blood tests. Celiac disease requires blood antibody tests and often an intestinal biopsy. Gluten sensitivity is diagnosed by ruling out the other two conditions.
Final Thoughts
If you suspect a problem with wheat, consult a doctor before removing it from your diet. Accurate testing ensures you receive the right treatment and avoid unnecessary restrictions.
